O'Neil, who was in her high school years at the time of the auditions, auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the beginning of 2005. She was able to advance to the top ten spots because of the enthusiasm shown by judges about her performances. The performance of O'Neil was highly appreciated by the jury. But, O'Neil suffered a significant loss in top 10 and Top 9 final weeks when she got votes for lowest 3 and the bottom 2. The judges were stunned by this and advised the audience to select contestants such as Melissa with the best singing abilities. In spite of consistently impressive performances from that point forward, O'Neil never again finished among the bottom three. The two other performances she gave on September 7,2005, where O'Neil advanced to the final two in the contest. Werner predicted that the morning newspapers would report O'Neil's victory over Rex Goudie as she became her third Canadian Idol and first female winner. O'Neil's Canadian Idol win was declared by the Prime Minister Paul Martin immediately.
